This paper examines how exposure to a variety of local, non-tradable amenities, specifically restaurant diversity, influences firm productivity within a city. Traditionally, the focus has been on the quantity of amenities across cities. We shift the lens to the variety of amenities available at fine spatial scales within a city. We employ an instrument variable strategy for causal inference, leveraging China’s prevalent presale housing system. Using data in Beijing, our results reveal a significant 4.9% increase in firm-level TFP associated with a one-standard-deviation rise in restaurant variety in firms' immediate vicinity. This effect is attributed to enhanced face-to-face interactions, a more skilled workforce, improved employee well-being, and increased innovation intensity. Notably, the impact is more pronounced for private firms, those with a greater reliance on labor and technology, and firms whose employees incur higher commuting costs. These findings highlight the crucial role of local consumption amenity diversity in shaping urban productivity, even at granular spatial scales.
